# Rate card followers

> A follower rate card copies every phase of another card at the same date and adds a markup, and the whole chain publishes and is reviewed as one

A **follower** is a [rate card](https://alguna.com/docs/rate-cards/overview) that takes its rates from another card, plus a markup. Each time the followed card publishes a [phase](https://alguna.com/docs/rate-cards/phases), the follower gets a copy of it at the same date with the markup applied. Use followers for price tiers or channels that must move with a base card: a Premium card at +10% over Standard, or a partner card at a discount. You change the base card once, and every follower changes with it.

You set up a follower in the dashboard. On the follower's source tab, choose **Another rate card** and select the card to follow. There is no public API to set up a follower. Setting up a follower, or changing its markup, publishes phases. It needs the permission to manage rate cards.

## Rules for following

* **Same currency.** The follower and the followed card must have the same currency.
* **One level deep.** A follower cannot be followed, and a card that has followers cannot follow another card. A card cannot follow itself.
* **At most 50 followers** for one card.
* **Matching entries.** For each entry of the followed card, the follower needs an entry with the same product and the same kind. If an entry is missing, the copy fails and names the follower and the entry.

Example: Premium follows Standard. Enterprise cannot follow Premium. Enterprise follows Standard.

## What a follower copies

When you set up a follower, it gets a copy of each published phase of the followed card, oldest first. After that, each new phase on the followed card becomes a phase on the follower with the same `effective_from`.

Example: Standard publishes phases from 1 Jun and 1 Jul. Premium gets phases from 1 Jun and 1 Jul.

* **The whole model.** The follower copies the followed card's model for each entry the phase sets. A cell removed on the followed card is removed on the follower at the same date.
* **Corrections.** A correction on the followed card becomes a correction of the matching phase on the follower.
* **Your pins.** A pin on the follower keeps its rate over the copy. See [Pins](https://alguna.com/docs/rate-cards/pins).

A follower never holds changes for review. Review happens on the followed card. See [One review for the chain](#one-review-for-the-chain).

## Markup

The markup is a percent of the followed card's rate. A markup of 10 sells every value at ×1.1. The percent must be more than -100 and at most 1000, so a negative markup gives a discount.

A follower scales **every** money and percentage value: unit rates, tier rates, fees and percentage rates. The dashboard shows the base value beside the result.

Example: Premium follows Token Standard at +10%.

| Cell | Standard | Premium |
| - | - | - |
| `orion-pro` / `us` | \$0.000003 per token | \$0.0000033 per token |
| Platform fee | \$500.00 a month | \$550.00 a month |
| A cell that charges 2% | 2% | 2.2%, shown as "2.2% (2% × 1.1)" |

Rates keep full precision. A rate of $0.32742 at ×1.1 is $0.360162, and Alguna keeps it exactly until the invoice line total rounds.

Markup rules can give some cells a different markup from the rest. The first rule that matches a cell wins. A fee always takes the default markup.

When you change the markup, the follower takes the new markup from that moment on. Its earlier phases do not change.

### Tiered markup fits only unit cells

A markup can have more than one band. Each band starts at a number of units already used in the billing period. More than one band turns a unit rate into graduated tiers.

Example: Premium marks up at 20% for the first 1,000,000 tokens and 10% after that. Standard's `orion-pro` in `us` is \$0.000003 per token. On Premium, it becomes:

| Tokens in the billing period | Rate per token |
| - | - |
| 0 to 1,000,000 | \$0.0000036 |
| Over 1,000,000 | \$0.0000033 |

1,500,000 tokens cost 1,000,000 × $0.0000036 + 500,000 × $0.0000033 = $3.60 + $1.65 = **\$5.25**.

A cell that is not a unit rate, and a fee, can take only one flat band. So Alguna refuses to save a tiered markup while the followed card has such a cell now or in a scheduled phase. If the followed card later publishes such a cell, that publish fails, and the error names the follower and the cell. For example: "Premium, entry "Tokens": cell payments is not a unit price, so its markup takes one flat markup band, not tiers".

## The chain publishes as one

A publish on the followed card and the copy on every follower commit together, or none of them do. So the cards of a chain never disagree about a date.

Example: Standard publishes a new list. Enterprise's markup does not fit one of the new cells. Nothing publishes on Standard, Premium or Enterprise, and the error names Enterprise and the cell.

If a card starts or stops following while you publish, the publish fails with 409: "the cards that follow this rate card changed; publish again". Publish again.

## One review for the chain

Review happens on the draft of the followed card. The review shows every card of the chain, each with the rates it would get at the chosen date, its markup and its pins. One approval publishes all of them. The review itself changes nothing.

Example: The review shows Standard, Premium (+10%) and Enterprise (+20%), and one button that publishes the three cards.

* If a follower cannot take the draft, the review shows the reason, and the publish fails with it.
* When a [source](https://alguna.com/docs/rate-cards/sources) holds changes for review, its draft is the one you review.
* Publishing the chain needs the permission to manage rate cards.

A person can also publish a draft on a follower, to change the follower's own rates. That draft cannot add or remove cells. A changed cell becomes a pin. See [Pins](https://alguna.com/docs/rate-cards/pins#editing-a-fed-cell-pins-it).

## Paused followers

If a follower's source is paused, new phases of the followed card do not reach it. When you resume it, the follower takes the followed card's rates again from that moment. See [Paused sources](https://alguna.com/docs/rate-cards/sources#paused-sources).

## Limits

* A follower cannot set a different markup for each entry. The fee takes the default markup, and markup rules apply to cells.
* Following is one level deep.
